Foundation Stage
Nursery is taught by Mrs Clarke and Mrs Quinn, and the Teaching Assistant is Mrs Hasseldon.
In Nursery the children begin their school life at St Wilfrid’s and their learning journey.
We encourage parents to bring their child into school for transition stay and play days in the term before they start. This is so that they already feel safe, and have begun to make new friends.
The children spend two years in the Foundation stage, which works as one unit. Both Reception and Nursery work together here.
The learning is highly structured and the work of this unit has been identified by the local education authority as Outstanding. The manager was asked to speak about the successful establishment of this unit at the Manchester Early Years Conference.
Many of our pupils enter the Nursery with attainment lower than national average, however they the Foundation stage with higher than National attainment. This is because of the excellent quality of teaching and learning that takes place.
The children have access to resources and activities that develop all of the Early Learning Goals, throughout the day. They are gathered into ability groups for direct teaching sessions, and group work.
