Art & Design

Our intent at St Wilfrid’s is to encourage all our pupils to develop their creativity and imagination through a varied and stimulating skills and knowledge based Art and Design Curriculum.

This intent is implemented in EYFS children by encouraging children to follow their interests and learn through creative play.  Following on, Key stage 1 children will develop their creativity and imagination by exploring the visual, tactile and sensory qualities of material and processes.

They will learn about the role of art, craft and design in their environment.

They begin to understand colour, shape and space and pattern and texture and use them to represent their ideas and feelings. They will also learn about specific artists and designers and explore different styles and processes used. Through our skills based curriculum children will be taught the transferrable skills needed to both enjoy this subject and achieve their age group expectations.

In Key stage 2 children will continue to develop their creativity and imagination further through more complex activities. This will build on existing skills and help to improve their control of materials, tools and techniques. Children will increase their awareness of the role and purpose of art, craft and design in different times and cultures. Children will become more confident in using different art materials and processes in order to express what they see, feel, and think.

Integral to our skills based approach to learning in Art and design is the clear sequence of skills taught. The children’s experiences and skills base will build year on year through the explicit teaching of these skills in the 3 strands. (Painting and drawing, Sculpture and 3D Art and Artist/Designer Appreciation.) Our Art and Design Curriculum is cyclical in terms of both revisiting Artistic eras and styles and revisiting skills. This is to ensure that children continually build on these artistic skills and knowledge.

Year Group Expectations

Every child has their own Art and D&T Log book, which will be a personal record for pieces of Art and Design and Design and Technology work. Finished pieces and photos of 3D work or displays will be evidenced in this book. Children will also have a sketch book which they will use to learn, practise and experiment with Art and Design Skills. These books will pass up through the school. When work is taken down from displays it could (where possible) be stapled into their Log books. These books are a place where the child’s art work can be evidenced and also a place where children can be creative and try out new ideas, techniques or media.

The Art and Design Curriculum is split into 3 Artistic eras for each year group, which will be taught as 3 blocks over 3 half terms, alternating with D&T. Within these Artistic eras there is a focus of one of the Art and design area listed below. The Scheme of work overview for each year group gives more detail about how the skills layer up year on year and which artists and designers children will focus on.

Art and Design Areas

Painting and Drawing – This is about drawing and painting techniques, sketching, using different media, colour mixing, creating effect with paint. This is also about improving their mastery of these skills over time.

Sculpture and 3D Art – This is about creating models, sculptures, designs with different materials to create 3D pieces of work.

Artist / Designer Appreciation – This is about looking in more depth at the life and work of a significant Artist or Designer, and using their style and ideas to inspire their own Art work.
